PokerStars.net APPT Sydney, Day 3: Antonio Fazzolari Heads Final

December 6, 2008

After a lengthy Day 2 to burst the money bubble, the remaining 48 players at the PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour Grand Final wasted no time in eliminating all but nine players to set the final table. Frank Saffioti took the chip lead into the day, but it was Antonio Fazzolari sitting on the big stack when the dust settled on Day 3 at the Star City Casino.

Jimmy Wong didn’t even get his seat warm before he became the first casualty of the day. On the first hand, he raised from under the gun with , and Antonio Fazzolari re-raised. Wong made the call, then moved all in on the flop. Fazzolari made the quick call with , and headed to the rail in 48th place (AU$8,400) when the turn and river ran out .

One thing that contributed to the speed of Day 3 play was the number of multiple eliminations. On two occasions, players were eliminated simultaneously on different tables just as the payouts were about to increase. In the first case, the prize money for 41st, 40th and 39th was added together and divided equally among George Lind, David Gorr and Graeme “Kiwi G” Putt. Each player took home AU$9,333 for his troubles. A short while later, the same thing happened again when Roel Pijpers and Anthony Rafter were both eliminated in 32nd place (AU$11,200).

The tournament became significantly less colorful when Jamie Pickering headed to the rail in 22nd place ($AU$15,400). Pickering, who showed up each day resplendent in his cowboy hat and tie-dyed shirts, lost a big pot to Jason Gray when his pocket kings couldn’t hold up against Gray’s . An ace on the river doubled Gray up and left Pickering on a short stack. He maneuvered his short stack through the field for a while before open-shoving with and being called — by Gray. Gray tabled , and the flop came down . Pickering needed a king or ten on the turn, but the left him drawing to just a king to stay alive. The on the river was no help, and Pickering headed to the rail as Gray padded his stack.

Eric Assadourian’s run at the championship ended in 20th place (AU$15,400) when he got all his chips in preflop against Brendan Edmonds. Assadourian’s needed help against Edmonds’ , and didn’t find any on a board of . Marlon Goonawardana became the next big name to fall when he busted in 19th place (AU$15,400). After Daniel Kowalski raised preflop, Frank Saffioti and Hai Bo Chu both called, but then Goonawardana moved all in over the top. Saffioti was the lone caller with , and Goonawardana tabled live cards with . The board ran out , and Saffioti’s two pair was enough to send Goonawardana home in 19th.

As the field grew shorter, the confrontations between big stacks became more meaningful. No clash on Day 3 was as big as the late run-in between Tom Rafferty and Antonio Fazzolari, with the chip lead going into the final table potentially at stake. Rafferty raised big preflop, and Fazzolari called from the button. The flop came down , and Rafferty fired again. Fazzolari called, and the turn brought the . Rafferty led out once more, but Fazzolari put in a big raise, sending Rafferty into the tank. After a moment, Rafferty folded, as Fazzolari moved up to nearly two million chips and the secure chip lead.

After Lisa Delellis was eliminated in 11th place (AU$28,000) the final-table bubble began. In a tough series of hands, Michael “TheBigSiCkO” Guzzardi busted in 10th place (AU$28,000) to set the final table. First he lost a big coin flip to Tim English when his couldn’t improve on a board of . English’s pocket sevens held up, and Guzzardi was crippled. Guzzardi was all in from the small blind on the very next hand, and had action from Tom Rafferty and Timothy English. English and Rafferty checked down the board of , and Rafferty showed for a pair. Guzzardi hadn’t looked at his cards yet, and the first one he revealed was good – the . The second card was the , and Guzzardi tripled up with his two pair. It wasn’t enough to keep him alive for long, as a few hands later he found all his chips in the middle again, this time against Hai Bo Chu and Antonio Fazzolari. The board ran out , and Chu’s was enough to bust Guzzardi’s in 10th place (AU$28,000).

As Guzzardi headed to the rail, the final nine players bagged their chips and redrew for their final-table seats. The chip counts and seat assignments looked like this at heading into the final:

Seat 1: Martin Rowe – 995,000
Seat 2: Jason Gray – 1,188,000
Seat 3: Tony Basile – 863,000
Seat 4: Timothy English – 945,000

PokerStars.com APPT Sydney, Day 2: International Stars Fall

December 5, 2008

The 217 players who made it through three separate Day 1 flights at the PokerStars.com Asia Pacific Poker Tour Grand Final returned to the Star City Casino in Sydney for a grueling Day 2. Over a long day’s play, the field thinned down to the final 48 competitors, who made their weary way to bed with the comfort of a guaranteed cash to their credit. The star-studded field began with Chris Moneymaker, John Juanda, Van Marcus, Carter Gill, Wooka Kim and Gavin Griffin. By the end of Day 2, all of those players were on the sidelines while Frank Saffioti, Brendan Edmonds, Phil Willcocks and Marlon Goonawardana were among the top names on the leader board.

Among the early casualties was Terrence “Not Johnny” Chan, who busted on the first hand of the day. Tony Dunst and John Juanda joined him soon after, and Chris Moneymaker also busted in the first few levels. Van Marcus’ Manila magic didn’t carry over to Sydney, as the APPT champ busted early on Day 2. Marcus moved the last of his chips in preflop with , only to find himself facing John Mendel’s . Like so many times on the way to his APPT victory in Manila, Marcus caught his card on the flop, but this time the on the turn gave Mendel a bigger set. The on the river was not the out Marcus was looking for, and he was busted.

Other eliminations on Day 2 included Lee “Final Table” Nelson, Masaaki Kagawa, Mark Vos and Gavin Griffin. Griffin lost a big pot to Eric Assadourian, then raised preflop with A-8. Michael Whibley re-raised, then quickly called Griffin’s all-in with A-Q. Griffin was behind preflop, but took the lead on the flop. The on the turn made a bigger two pair for Whibley, and Griffin needed help on the river. The wasn’t it, and the EPT, WPT and WSOP champ missed his shot to add an APPT trophy to his crowded mantle.

As the evening wore on and the bubble neared, Marlon Goonawardana continued to build a head of steam and a huge stack. In one key hand, Goonawardana re-raised Andrew Meldrum preflop with . Meldrum shipped the last of his chips in and Goonawardana made the call only to see Meldrum flip over for the bigger pocket pair. In a cruel way to end things, the board ran out , giving Goonawardana a set on the river to bust Meldrum and move him up near the top of the leader board. Other notable survivors included Day 1a chip leader Phil Willcocks and Jamie Pickering, who put on a late surge to move into the lead as play concluded.

After several all-in moments on the bubble, David Sanis was the bubble boy, leaving the event at the hands of Tim English. Sanis built his stack back up from tiny to merely short, but when he moved all in with , English quickly called with . The flop hit both players, coming down , but English’s set left Sanis needing to draw nearly perfect to survive. The on the turn left Sanis drawing dead, and the irrelevant came on the river as the remaining 48 players were in the money.

Join PokerNews at 12:30 PM Sydney time on Saturday as the remaining 48 players make their way to the final table and the AUD $1,000,000 top prize. Preliminary chip counts showed these players among the top ten chip stacks entering Day 3 play:

Brendan Edmonds – 508,000
Phil Willcocks – 390,000
Marlon Goonawardana – 370,000
Jamie Pickering – 360,000
Tony Basile – 355,000
Antonio Fazzolari – 342,000
Ray Lapitan – 330,000
Mamouni Smain – 320,000
Timothy English – 310,000

PokerStars.com APPT Sydney, Day 1b: Jason Gray Enjoys Huge Opening Session

December 3, 2008

The field for Day 1b of the PokerStars.com Asia Pacific Poker Tour Grand Final at the Star City Casino in Sydney was larger than Day 1a, with 172 players joining the event. Among the big names on hand were Gavin Griffin, Raymond Rahme, Terrence Chan and Mark Vos, as well as local favorites Jeff Lisandro, Billy “The Croc” Argyros and 2007 champion Grant “Grunter” Levy. At the end of the day, it was Australian pro Jason Gray leading the pack, with Gavin Griffin his nearest competitor atop the leader board.

Billy “The Croc” Argyros was an early casualty, putting him on the bad end of a last-longer bet he was trying to set up with 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Peter Eastgate. Argyros put up $10,000 AUD that he would outlast Eastgate in the tournament, based on his assumption that the newly-minted world champ would be jetlagged from flying into Sydney the night before the tournament. Argyros busted early on Day 1b, leaving him the guaranteed loser if Eastgate makes the money. Argyros went bust in a brutal set-over-set hand against Terrence Chan when his was no good on a flop of against Chan’s .

Other notable eliminations on Day 1b included 2007 champ Grant Levy. He never got anything going in the event, and busted when he put the last of his chips in the middle with and was called by a player with . The board ran out , and Levy headed to the rail. Jeff Lisandro, Gary Benson, Raymond Rahme and Peter Aristidou were among the bustouts on Day 1b.

Several big names performed well on Day 1b, as Mark Vos picked up aces twice in short order and doubled up both times with them. Vos lost some chips late in the day but finished in the middle of the pack. Finishing up somewhat better was Gavin Griffin, who came to Sydney to add a fourth notch on his belt. Griffin already has titles from the World Series of Poker, European Poker Tour and World Poker Tour to his credit, and he finished Day 1b second in chips as he looks to add an APPT trophy to his mantle.

By far the biggest stack in the field at the end of the day belonged to Jason Gray, and he moved into the lead early with a huge pot against Nathanael Seet. Gray raised preflop and was reraised by Seet. Gray called, and the flop came down . Seet led out, and Gray called once more to see the come on the turn. Seet checked, and Gray fired a bet. Seet check-raised all in, and Gray called with for the straight. Seet tabled for an overpair and a straight draw, but the on the river was no help as he headed to the rail and Gray dragged a massive pot. Gray never relinquished his chip lead, finishing the day with a huge edge over Griffin and the rest of the field. Other notable survivors included Lee Nelson, Eric Assadourian, Mark Vos and Jamie Pickering.

Join Pokernews at 12:30 PM local time as Thursday’s Day 1c starting session kicks off. The top ten chip counts from Day 1b play were as follows:

Jason Gray – 185,000
Gavin Griffin – 130,000
Andy Meldrum – 78,000
Mark Vos – 74,000
Sam Korman – 73,000
Marlon Goonawardana – 68,000
Andrew Scott – 61,000

Assadour Assadourian – 45,000
