Problem Gamblers May Seek Help From Pennsylvania Department Of Health

August 8, 2010

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has recently stepped up their efforts to aid pathological gamblers in receiving help with their problem. Following the incorporation of table games into the state’s casinos, the Department of Health was met with the concern that the number of problem gamblers would increase.

“For most people, gambling is simply a game,” began Robin Rothermel, the Department of Health’s Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Programs’ director. “However, for the up to four percent of gamblers for whom gambling may become a problem, it can be a devastating illness that affects you and everyone close to you.”

The Pennsylvania Department of Health is offering a wide range of resources to help those in need. This assistance begins with a hotline and has no end of aid available.

The hotline will bring brochures, related information, and much more. Amongst the counseling options available there are self help groups, private care options, and even subsidized care fueled by the state.

Pennsylvania’s Department of Health has also decided to detail some of the early signs of problem gambling. Less time with friends and family, more money being spent on gambling, and even theft in order to fuel the gambling fire are all amongst the early signs of a gambling addiction.

Dangers of pathological gambling are also being touted, ranging from debit to job loss and even suicide or worse.

Many states have programs in place to help stop gambling addictions, and the different USA online gambling sites are also on top of reducing the number of pathological gamblers. With online software it is even easier for players to monitor their losses and even impose limits on losses.

British Columbian Lottery Corp Online Gambling Site Still Down

August 6, 2010

Several weeks ago the British Colombian Lottery Corporation had introduced a website, PlayNow.Com, that would allow residents of the province to play regulated and legal online gambling games.

The popularity of PlayNow.Com had ended up bringing down the site. Unable to hold the horde of traffic hitting the site, the servers had been shut down.

Though the British Colombian Lottery Corporation has been working to bring the servers back up and re-release the site, PlayNow is still showing an apology to those who have been affected by the server crash.

“I had been looking forward to the regulated casino games,” began Joshua F., an optimistic gambler. “I guess everyone else was too, ’cause [sic] the site still is not open and ready to go.”

The B.C.L.C. has introduced the first government licensed and regulated online gambling website in North America. The province’s change in policy has opened doors to other possibilities, such as Quebec considering the regulation of online gambling.

Unfortunately, the United States has yet to open their doors to allow regulated online gambling. While efforts are in place to bring about the regulation of gambling on the Internet, most notably H.R. 2267, or the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act, there has been limited success thus far.

USA online gambling may soon be regulated, but the legislation required is still in its infancy. Online casinos and USA online poker rooms are likely to be those that are regulated.

Gala Coral raises cash for charity in 3 Peaks Challenge

August 2, 2010

The Gala Coral group, an online and land gambling operator in the UK, has received some well deserved applause for its latest achievements in raising funds for the Sue Ryder Care charity.

Last weekend, 29 employees drawn from the group’s subsidiaries completed the notoriously tough 3 Peaks Challenge, raising an additional £30,000 in its charity drive. The Challenge, saw the employees climb the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours, taking the company to £1.2 million towards its £1.5 million target for 2010.

After smashing its initial target to raise £1 million for the charity in 2009, Gala Coral pledged to raise a further £500,000 for the charity, which provides end of life and long-term care to people living with conditions including cancer, multiple sclerosis, stroke and Huntingdon’s disease.

Paul Woodward, chief executive Sue Ryder Care, said: “On behalf of Sue Ryder Care, I can’t thank everybody at Gala Coral enough for their truly fantastic support. The money Gala Coral employees continue to raise enables us not only to maintain provision of care via our health and social services nationwide but to develop and grow so that we can reach out to more people.

“We know that many people prefer to be cared for in their own homes. As such, with the support of money raised from Gala Coral we will continue to develop community based services that support people to live well in their own homes for as long as possible – and when the time comes, die with dignity, free of pain and in their preferred place of choice.”

“We are very proud of our staff and customer’s ongoing commitment and enthusiasm in support of Sue Ryder Care,” said Dr Colin Morgan, head of corporate responsibility for Gala Coral Group. “This climb was not an easy one, it was more of an endurance test than a trek with mist and rain and night time walking!”

Gala Coral Group selected Sue Ryder Care as its nominated charity following an employee vote in May 2008. Other fundraising activities have seen 24 employees, trek 75 miles and ascending 2,700 metres to Everest Base Camp and a London to Cambridge bike ride.
