Mayweather Jr. vs. Marquez Fight Odds

September 16, 2009

Make no mistake about it, Mayweather Jr. vs. Marquez fight odds are in high demand even with the ridiculously high price on Floyd Mayweather Jr. (-450).  By comparison, his opponent, Juan Manuel Marquez, would pay out $325 for every $100 bet if he were to win at Sportsbetting.com.

There are two ways to look at this fight for sports bettors.  Either Mayweather is a "lock" and the $450 price tag to win $100 is a "done deal" (you would get back the $450 plus $100 profit/win if Mayweather were to walk off victorious) or Marquez the underdog could end up shocking Mayweather and, hence, the risk/reward ratio would be extraordinary with a $325 payout.

This victory isn’t too far out of reach.

Marguez is widely considered Mexico’s No. 1 active boxer and ranks No. 2 on most pound-for-pound lists. He has won world titles at featherweight, junior lightweight and lightweight while beating a number of quality opponents.

Marquez also owns convincing victories against Marco Antonio Barrera and Rocky Juarez and was in a pair of pitched battles with pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, getting the short end of a one-point split decision in a 2008 junior lightweight championship fight and being held to a draw in a 2004 featherweight title bout.

Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KOs) doesn’t seem offended that he’s such a significant ‘dog against Mayweather ((39-0, 25 KOs).

"I think that life is full of surprises," Marquez said through an interpreter. "This is what motivates me. This is what makes me train hard. When I wake up in the morning, it makes me want to train harder, run faster and longer. These are the kind of fights that motivate me. I’m going to prove everybody wrong."

Delaware wants two and three-game parlays

September 10, 2009

Last month’s federal appeals court ruling in Philadelphia that the state of Delaware can offer only parlay bets on “at least three” NFL games is back under the spotlight this week as lawyers go for a two-game parlay imprimatur as well as a three-game.

David Margules, a lawyer retained by Delaware state, wrote to a federal judge Tuesday, indicating that the state is considering offering two-game parlays.

“The Third Circuit did not address the permissibility of multi-game betting on two NFL games,” attorney David Margules wrote. According to Margules, the state currently plans to proceed only with parlays involving at least three games, and has informed the sports leagues and the NCAA that it would give 30 days notice if it decides to introduce two-game parlays.

In the letter, Margules asks Chief District Judge Gregory Sleet in Wilmington to vacate a September 1 order permanently prohibiting the state from offering single-game betting, betting on sports other than professional football, or any sports betting scheme that was not conducted in 1976.

Margules argued that the order was premature because the appeals court will not formally return the case to Sleet until the September 14 deadline for the state to challenge the appeals court ruling expires.

Margules also noted that the appeals court did not require that Delaware’s new sports betting lottery be identical in every respect to its 1976 rules. The court said certain differences are allowed “as long as they do not effectuate a substantive change” from the 1976 sports betting scheme.

“No record has been developed on whether a two-game parlay would ‘effectuate a substantive change’ from a three-game parlay,” Margules wrote.

Finally, Margules said Sleet’s order does not comply with federal rules requiring that an injunction specifically state the actions that are being restrained or prohibited.

“Defendants are therefore without clear guidance what they must refrain from doing…” he wrote.

Attorneys for the leagues agree that there are problems with Sleet’s order and have agreed not to seek to enforce it as long as the state offers only parlays of three games or more.

Michael Barlow, legal counsel for Governor Jack Markell, said the purpose of the letter was to ensure that Sleet’s order is consistent with the appeals court opinion.

While the appeals court expressly prohibited single game betting and declared three-game parlays appropriate, questions remain about the permissibility of two-game betting, Barlow said.

“The two game stuff wasn’t necessarily resolved in the words of the 3rd Circuit opinion,” he said.

Betsafe joins Cryptologic licensee list

September 10, 2009

Online gambling software provider Cryptologic has signed a three-year agreement to license its full Internet casino suite to Betsafe, a Malta-based online gaming operator with a growing customer base of over 250,000 players.

The deal takes the total number of Cryptologic licensees to 26 and is the second full casino hosting licensing deal signed by the company this (2009) year.

Cryptologic’s download casino is the first ever offered by Betsafe, enabling it to benefit from the software provider’s complete suite of over 200 games and promotional tools. The Cryptologic casinos will initially be based on the Euro currency and in English, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish languages, with an option to widen the range of languages and currencies in the future.

Under the terms of the agreement, Cryptologic becomes Betsafe’s exclusive supplier of download casino software, which allows players to pre-install Cryptologic’s online casino to their PCs and thereby enjoy the full extent of its content-rich and interactive branded and proprietary games.

In addition, Cryptologic will also become a non-exclusive supplier of a full suite of instant play casino games, primarily aimed at casual players who do not wish to download games on their computers.

The games are expected to become available on Betsafe’s website by the end of 2009 and will provide the software company with recurring revenue based on wagers placed by Betsafe’s customers.

Brian Hadfield, President and CEO of Cryptologic, said: “This is the first time Betsafe, one of the fastest-growing operators, has offered a download casino to its players. The agreement underlines Cryptologic’s credentials as a trusted partner with branded and innovative proprietary games and a technology platform that is second to none. In line with our strategy, this deal also provides us with greater penetration into the Scandinavian market and is a further significant step towards our goal of profitability and long-term growth.”

“We are delighted to sign this agreement with Cryptologic,” said Henrik Persson, chief executive at Betsafe. “Betsafe casino is committed to providing its customers with the best gaming experience available and this collaboration with Cryptologic will help us achieve that goal.”
