International Cricket Council weighs in on Betfair advertising dispute

January 14, 2009

The furore swirling around Australian cricket commentators punting Betfair services during a recent test match took on an international flavour this week as the International Cricket Council (ICC) weighed in with some influential criticism. The governing body for international cricket joined protests that this type of on-air advertising for a betting agency puts the integrity of the game at risk.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reports that the ICC refuses to have any dealings with gambling ventures and goes to great lengths to prevent players from betting on games after a damaging match fixing scandal in the 1990s.

Channel Nine has apparently remained undeterred by the controversy surrounding its decision to advertise betting agency Betfair during its ball-by-ball cricket commentary, which kept viewers up to date on Betfair rates and odds on the game..

The innovative advertising tactic has evoked critical comment from one of Australia’s most vociferous anti-gambling activists, the independent South Australian Senator Nick Xenaphon, who said: “Those revered commentators spruiking Betfair in the way that they have really undermines their credibility and has a potential to undermine the credibility of cricket.”

ICC president David Morgan said he found the practice disturbing: “That is something that Haroon Lorgat, our chief executive has been in conversation with Cricket Australia about,” he told ABC radio’s PM program. “I know that the whole issue of the discretion of odds, on current games being broadcast is something that Mr Lorgat has had some discussion with Cricket Australia about.

“What we are convinced about is cricketers are no longer assisting bet makers.”

Cricket Australia has a sponsorship deal with Betfair, as has Channel Nine, reports ABC.

Senator Xenophon said the ICC needs to do more to stop what he described as the blatant promotion of gambling. “It’s clear that what Cricket Australia is doing – cosying up with Betfair – is bad for the game of cricket,” he said.

“There are real dangers with Betfair’s involvement with cricket, the very nature of Betfair where you can bet on a losing event, you can bet on someone playing badly, that opens up the game of cricket to corrupt events.

“The ICC really needs to go much further rather than just skirting around the issue.”

Avalon Wins Hands Down on All Slots Casino – 01-13-09

January 13, 2009

January 13 – It is not difficult to understand the appeal of Avalon, one of the most graphically stunning and feature rich games to come out of Microgaming’s slot portfolio in a long time. This five reel, twenty pay line game brings to life the beautiful tale of the island of Avalon from the legend of King Arthur, combining old world wonders with contemporary slot entertainment.

Regular players at All Slots Casino, a Microgaming online casino, have voted hands down that Avalon is the most popular game in the site’s slots arsenal, beating other top titles.

All Slots Casino revealed this week that players try their luck at Avalon more than they do any other game. In addition, players spend more money on Avalon than other games on the site.

One player at the site, identified only as Johnny H. said: “I play Avalon almost exclusively. The Lady of the Lake doesn’t land for me much, but I play a strategy of gambling on all my hits bigger than my bet, and it works for me.”

What makes Avalon so appealing is not only the beauty of the graphics and images, or the haunting music that plays in the background. This game brings with it excellent bonus features to make the player’s gaming session both entertaining AND rewarding.

The Lady of the Lake scatter symbol is particularly sought after as three or more of these that land anywhere on the reels award the player with twelve free spins. Throw in multipliers of up to 7x and the lure of Avalon is clearly understood!

High rollers also love Avalon as it allows them to wager up to $100 per spin!

AGA still divided over online gambling in the USA

January 12, 2009

The spirits of supporters of legalised and regulated online gambling in the United States were lifted at G2E last year when the chief of the American Gaming Association, Frank Fahrenkopf, revealed that his members – all high powered American land gambling companies – would be discussing the issue in detail at a December board meeting. Unfortunately, it appears that there has been little change in attitudes, and that some members are still opposed to online gambling.

In an IGN interview this week Fahrenkopf said that the Association had been unable to arrive at a unified view and approach to online gambling, dashing perhaps optimistic hopes that the severe financial pressures imposed on the land gambling industry by the global economic recession would have helped bring about a change in thinking.

However, Fahrenkopf noted that some members, notably Harrah’s Entertainment Inc., had expressed an intention to go it alone in pressing for Internet gambling regulation during the 111th Congress.

ESPN To Broadcast WSOP Europe – Online Casino News

January 9, 2009

American sports television broadcaster ESPN has announced that it will begin airing eight original hours of the Main Event from last year’s World Series of Poker (WSOP) Europe starting on February 1.

The second-annual event took place in November at the Casino At The Empire in London and attracted 362 of the globe’s best players. The $1.5 million first place prize was won by 22-year-old Danish poker professional Peter Eastgate after he defeated Russian counterpart Ivan Demidov heads-up.

ESPN’s coverage will debut on February 1 with the first four hour-long episodes beginning at six o’clock in the evening before an encore presentation of the first two episodes on ESPN2 later at ten o’clock. Further episodes will air on February 8 and 15 before the final two instalments are broadcast on March 1 at ten and eleven o’clock in the evening.

‘The intimate look and feel of this tournament is different from other WSOP events we produced in the United States,’ said Doug White, Senior Director of Programming and Acquisitions for ESPN.

The shows will co-hosted by Lon McEachern and Norman Chad and feature a new innovation known as the Mobile Hole Card Camera, which allows ESPN to show the hole cards from key hands.

‘We believe the Mobile Hold Card Camera will provide fans a great understanding of the overall story behind the tournament, and how the players advanced to the final table,’ said Jamie Horowitz, Senior Sports Producer for ESPN.

Top poker players pick up Dwan’s million dollar gauntlet

January 8, 2009

It hasn’t taken long for some of the world’s most accomplished online poker players to accept the $1.5 million challenge thrown out earlier this week by online poker ace Tom “durrr” Dwan. Phil Ivey, David Benyamine, Barry Greenstein and Patrik Antonius have all picked up the gauntlet, according to Poker Road Radio.

Benyamine is likely to be the first to take on Dwan in what promises to be an epic match that will probably be hosted by the Full Tilt Poker website.

Dwan’s extraordinarily confident challenge earlier this week was that he would put down $1.5 million to any challenger’s $500,000 in games played on four virtual tables simultaneously, heads-up with minimum $200/$400 stakes. Each contender will have to play at least 50,000 hands and if the challenger finishes even a dollar more than where he started, he wins Dwan’s $1.5 million. Conversely, if ‘durrrr’ ends up ahead, he gets to keep the challenger’s $500,000.

The players have all competed at one time or another against each other on the Full Tilt nosebleed tables, and therefore have some idea of their opponents’ strengths and weaknesses. Added to the considerable talent each has, this makes for some truly exciting high stakes poker action.

Australian anti-gambling activists call for capped spending smart-cards

January 7, 2009

Anti-gambling activists in Australia are calling for pre-paid smart cards to be introduced into gaming venues to reduce problem gambling, reports the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Under the plan, users would nominate a monthly cap on the amount of money they would be prepared to lose.

Anti-gambling activist Tim Costello says gaming operators are deliberately targeting socially-isolated people in Melbourne’s outer suburbs, in particular, bored women. “Fifty-three cents in every dollar going through a machine comes from someone who is an addict,” he alleged, without producing his sources for this information.

“We certainly know that in the outer suburbs where there are few community centres, public transport is harder to get into the city and to other events, that a social recreational need can often become a quite devastating gambling addiction.”

Costello claims that smart cards used in Canada and in several European countries have helped stem the tide of gambling losses. “[It] overcomes the biggest problem, which is saying I’m only one win away from not having a problem, I’ll keep chasing my losses,” Costello said.
