Hachem nearly gets in fight at EPT Grand Final

Former World Series of Poker main event champion Joe Hachem is nicknamed “Salty” for a reason, apparently.

With 82 players left in the European Poker Tour’s Grand Final, Hachem nearly got into fisticuffs with a player named Woody Deck. At the time, players were two away from the money bubble.

Here’s what happened, according to pokerkingblog.com:

Joe Hachem was involved in a hand with Peter Traply. On a board of A-6-J-A-3, Hachem bet out 80,000 and Traply called, showing A-10. Hachem tapped the table, said “nice call”, and mucked his hand. This is where things got heated.

WPT Ladies Championship down to final table

The ladies took over the Bellagio the last couple days to play out their inaugural World Poker Tour Ladies Championship. The 150-person field was whittled down to six on Monday, and now the ladies will have to wait 11 days to find out who the actual winner is.

Leading the pack into the final table will be Vanessa Selbst. With $182,200 in chips, Selbst has a considerable lead over the pack, with her nearest competitor being Nancy Todd Tyner with $107,400 in chips.

PokerStars.net offering free seats to the WSOP

PokerStars kicked off their annual WSOP Million Dollar Giveaway freerolls this week and will be awarding a total of 80 seats to this summer’s Main Event.

Stock prices tumble for Vegas casinos

Tuesday was a bad day for the major Las Vegas casinos, as many of their stock prices took big hits.

The stock losses came a day after MGM Mirage said it was going to be laying off more than 400 workers.

According to a story at majorwager.com, printed in the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

Shares of MGM Mirage, traded on the New York Stock Exchange, closed at $49.58, down $2.24, or 4.32 percent. MGM Mirage was trading at $100.50 in October. Other casino operators also fell in value during trading Tuesday.

MGM Mirage to lay off hundreds

MGM Mirage, which is the largest casino operator in Las Vegas, has reported that it will lay off about 440 employees.

The layoffs will occur mostly in management at the corporate level, MGM Mirage reported Monday.

MGM Mirage President and COO Jim Murren said Monday that management and supervisory level staff reductions were part of a process that will save MGM Mirage about $75 million annually. Most of the local workers were told of the cutbacks Monday.

Debate flares over WPT Ladies Championship

When the World Poker Tour return to Las Vegas next week for its big finale, the $25,000 WPT Championship won’t be the only tournament taking place at Bellagio.

The WPT Ladies tour, which officially kicked off this January at Borgata in Atlantic City, will also conclude with a $1,500 championship event at the famed Las Vegas poker destination. What the event lacks in buy-in compared to the big tourney is already being made up for in controversy, thanks to a chunk of the prize pool being set aside up front for charity.

2+2’s Mason Malmuth has now gone on record as saying neverwin is a “ticking time bomb” and “damaging to the poker industry,” according to neverwin. Previously, Malmuth has banned 2+2 members associated with neverwin
