WPT L.A. Poker Classic begins today

After a month of battle at one of the finest cardrooms in the United States, professionals and amateurs alike will step up to the felt today for the start of the World Poker Tour’s L.A. Poker Classic $10,000 Championship Event.

The tournament, a stalwart on the scene since the inception of the WPT, is one of the most popular stops on the circuit. The field has grown exponentially every year the tournament’s been on the WPT schedule, from 135 players in 2003 to a monstrous 791 runners last year.

HBP: Excellent summary post of coverage of Absolute scandal

A growing number of bloggers and various other poker news sources are refusing to let the Absolute Poker cheating scandal die, and we say more power to them. One example of such a source: Hard-Boiled Poker, which published an excellent summary post on the coverage given to the story to date.

The problem, concludes HBP, isn’t so much a lack of coverage but a lack of interest on the part of readers. Excerpt:

Poker Player?s Alliance spent $900,000 on lobbying in 2007

Online poker lobbying group the Poker Player’s Alliance spent over $900,000 on lobbying activities in 2007, according to disclosure forms released earlier this month by the US Senate. The PPA counts nearly 800,000 poker players among its member ranks.

Where did the money go? According to a breakdown provided by OpenSecrets, the funds were spread across five Washington lobbying firms, including Patton Boggs LLP and Ogilvy Government Relations.

Israel MK seeks online gambling censorship

Knesset Member Amnon Cohen, of the Orthodox Shas party, presented a bill this week in Israel that would block gambling, sex and violence-oriented Web sites in Israel.

The bill, which was passed in its first reading Wednesday, would automatically block online casinos, online poker sites, online porn sites and more unless customers specifically ask to be allowed to visit those sites.

It will now be sent to the Economic Affairs Committee before returning to the Knesset plenum for second and third readings.

WSOPC heads to Hawkeye State

Canada hosts largest “automated” poker tournament

A casino in Quebec recently held the largest ever tournament held entirely on automated tables. According to a story at pokerpages.com, Casino de Montreal hosted a $225 buyin no-limit Texas hold’em tournament on Feb. 12, with 240 players competing on dealerless electronic poker tables. The casino just opened on Jan. 18. Other facilities with the automated tables, developed by PokerTek, Inc., had hosted tourneys with 100 players previously.

Layla Kayleigh grabs the top spot in AskMen?s top 10 poker hotties list

Any list of attractive women in poker that doesn’t include Shana Hiatt but puts Jennifer Tilly in the #2 slot clearly has some methodological issues, but AskMen’s recently published list of the top 10 ‘Poker Hotties’ salvaged at least some credibility by awarding WPT hostess Layla Kayleigh the top spot.
