WPT ready to hit the boardwalk at the Borgata

With only a few days off after simultaneous World Poker Tour and World Series of Poker Circuit stops in Tunica, Miss., the WPT storms into the eastern poker Mecca of Atlantic City for the $10,000 Borgata Winter Open on Sunday.

The preliminaries of the first major event in Atlantic City for 2008 have been well attended, to say the least. The first tournament, a $300+$50 No-Limit Hold’em event on Jan. 15, brought in a stunning 1,649 players, and other tournaments with buy-ins as high as $2,500 have seen well over 300 runners come to the line. The turnout demonstrates that poker is alive and well on the East Coast.

Poker Stars and Full Tilt cooperating with Harrahs to offer Heads Up Poker Championship seats

In an announcement that’s a bit more significant than the typical online poker promotion, PokerStars.net revealed this week that they’ll be offering the opportunity for a PokerStars player to fill one of the four seats not already assigned for the 2008 Heads Up Poker Championship (a list of the sixty assigned seats follows at the end of the article). The news comes just days after Full Tilt Poker announced a similar promotion.

Charles Nesson appears on Colbert Report, promotes poker as educational tool

Harvard professor and online poker supporter Charles Nesson was interviewed on the Colbert Report recently, and he managed to get in most of his talking points around Colbert’s shtick.

Nesson wrapped up the interview by asking Colbert of he plays poker (he does) and with a challenge to the Colbert to assemble the presidential candidates on his show for a game of poker.

Faust-ian drama at 2008 World Poker Open

Hoyt Corkins, the soft-spoken Alabamian who frequently wields a big stack, had waited a year and a half for a chance at his second WPT title. Thanks to Brett Faustman, it looks like he’ll have to wait a little longer.

Brett Faustman, a commercial insurance salesman and former poker dealer, made good on a $1,000 satellite investment by defeating Hoyt Corkins at the end of a marathon WPT final table that saw 148 hands of poker played. Drama seemed to be in the cards from the moment the lineup was set, and the players gave the crowd at the 2008 World Poker Open a show worth watching.

World Series of Poker radio to begin next week

January 28 will see the launch of WSOP Radio, the official show for the 2008 World Series of Poker.

The show, which will be presented by Milwaukee’s Best Light, is produced by Bluff Media. Host Nick Geber is a regular commentator on “World Series of Poker Live” as well as being a host of “Fox Football Friday.” Described as an “avid poker player,” he said that he is “very excited to bring poker’s “Major League” to the airwaves.”

Antigua expects whitelisting following meeting with UK Minister Sutcliffe

Less than two weeks after being notified that it had not met the mark for Gambling Commission white list requirements, Antigua and Barbados is optimistic about approval. Following a meeting yesterday with UK Minister for Sport Gerry Sutcliffe, Antigua’s Minister of Finance Dr. Errol Cort expressed optimism about his country’s chances of being added to the UK white list.
